“What Does It Mean To Be Latino? PBS Investigates”

Watch Finding Your Roots: Michelle Rodriguez, Adrian Grenier & Linda Chavez – Preview on PBS. See more from Finding Your Roots.

“With a last name like mine – Alanis – I’ve always wondered where exactly my family history comes from.  It hasn’t helped any that for the majority of my life people have often confused me for being Asian instead of Latino.  A few have even reprimanded ‘“you don’t look Mexican!’ in confusion and frustration after I could not understand the language they initially began speaking to me in.  ‘Are you sure?’ …sometimes they continue as if though I’m only pretending for the sake of avoiding conversation.  These situations can get pretty hilarious pretty quickly.  Trust me!”

As Google Tweaks Searches, Some Get Lost in the Web

Andrew Strauss and Google Search at dm2hispanics.com

Google Inc. GOOG +2.92% recently tweaked the way its search engine ranks websites, seeking to downplay sites it suspects of artificially boosting their rankings. Now some small businesses say they are scrambling to avoid being relegated to the Internet’s junk bin. Among them is Andrew Strauss, the 47-year-old co-owner of San Francisco-based Oh My Dog Supplies LLC. Andrew Strauss said his dog-supply site suffered after Google’s changes. In the past, about 70% of his customers found his company from the results of Google searches, often for terms such as ‘dog beds’ or ‘dog clothes.’ Ever since Google’s algorithm change at the end of last month, he says his website isn’t showing up in Google rankings—at least not where most people would see it.”

“Facebook and Amex Tread on Groupon’s Turf”

“While Facebook Offers has been available to brands nationwide for less than two weeks, marketers are already assessing how the free-to-use deals platform might compete against Groupon. Chris Awad, a director for New York-based local marketing start-up eBoxed, says Facebook Offers will be attractive to SMBs that want low-risk social commerce opportunities. He’s run a handful of Facebook Offers for restaurant and day spa clients in recent weeks. The results, he said, have been fairly encouraging so far. ’[It's] very easy to see that Groupon will have to come up with something strategic to combat Facebook Offers,’ Awad said. ‘For now, Facebook seems like the easy go-to option.’”
